Yeah, that’s right I play D & D…what of it?

So two Sundays ago and an archangel of the Ehlonnia religion was turned evil and we were forced to kill him. I was very saddened by this and am still in mourning. Are you asking yourself “What the hell is Carly talking about” yet? Let me explain.

Every Sunday for the past 2 years, I have gotten together with a group of friends to play Dungeons and Dragons, or as the cool kids call it “D & D.” In our current campaign, I am a 5th level Elvin Cleric. My cleric’s name is Fern and she was abandoned by her family at a young age. She was taken in by the Belladonnian convent. The Belldonnian nuns are followers of Ehlonna. Are you still with me? The group Fern is traveling with consists of childhood friends that were brought back together after two of their friends went missing. We found these friends in a mad scientists’ lab, but not until after the they had been experimented on. Currently the group is traveling around, trying to find this mad scientist and claim vengeance.

How the heck did I get myself into this? Well…When my friends Jeremy and Kate moved up from Portland, Oregon, Jeremy was bummed because he had lost all his D & D playing friends. I started playing to make Jeremy less homesick, but despite myself I ended up really enjoying the game.

What do I enjoy about the game? Let me share;
There is so much creativity that goes into the game. The best way it can be explained is like the old “Choose Your Own Adventure” books. How the game progresses totally depends on the choices you and your group make. There is basically an infinite amount of characters you can play. You start out with a race (i.e. Elf) and a class (i.e. Cleric), but from there the character is totally yours. My preference is to play spell casting characters, but I had a lot of fun playing a ranger in the last campaign. Is this geeky enough for you yet? I also like the fact that I have a group of friends that I get to see once a week. We all take this game pretty serious, so we hardly ever skip a Sunday.

So that my friends, is my D & D side. I have never played WOW (World of War Craft) and don’t see myself doing that anytime soon, even though it is fairly similar to D & D. I will never L.A.R.P (Live Action Role Play), which is pretty much people playing D & D, but like out in park in costume. That’s just weird!
