In one of the courses I took at Western, a guy gave a presentation on music being the true universal language. He said that, even if you don’t understand what is being sung, you will find yourself moving your body to the rhythm of the music. I like music. Most of the music I listen to is mass marketed pop music (think Lady Gaga). Thanks to my friends that have more refined tastes, I do know a few bands that are not huge and I do enjoy listening to their music very much. One thing I love about music is that it can trigger memories, so that is what I am going to write about.
Coldplay
I have two distinct memories of Coldplay. Memory one is going to their first American concert at the Showbox in Seattle. No one had heard of them before and my friend Emilio said I needed to check them out. It was the only time I have enjoyed seeing a concert at the Showbox. Memory two makes me remember getting my heart broken for the first time. I remember walking to class the day after it happened listening to “Don’t Panic.” Say what you will about Coldplay (they have been known to rip off some of their songs) but Chris Martin can write some amazing lyrics. See for yourself below;
Bones, sinking like stones,
All that we fought for,
And homes, places we've grown,
All of us are done for.
And we live in a beautiful world,
Yeah we do, yeah we do,
We live in a beautiful world,
Oh, all that I know,
There's nothing here to run from,
Cause, yeah, everybody here's got somebody to lean on.
I remember walking to class in the rain, crying because I hurt more than I had ever hurt in my entire life and feeling some relief from the lyrics. It was my first reminder that time cures all wounds and that aside from the pain I was feeling; the world was a beautiful place. And eventually I did get over the heartbreak.
